It’s hard to imagine a better sounding network player than the NP5 Prisma, in part due to the fact that it is the same circuitry we have throughout the entire Prisma range from the award winning SC15 Prisma all the way up to the PRE35 Prisma, with the major improvements in performance coming from carefully managed network player to DAC interface, but most significantly the more sophisticated and substantial power supplies involved.
So, any similar improvements to the power supply of the NP5 Prisma will realise similar and noticeable benefits, as in our effort to keep the cost of the NP5 Prisma as reasonable as possible the decision was made to use a good sounding, inexpensive AC plug power supply, with the understanding that this would allow those who were able to and interested in spending more to improve the sound the better ability to add an after market supply.
In fact, we have some customers reporting transformative performance improvements with external supplies that cost considerably more than the NP5 Prisma and feeling it is well worth it. In effect this is what we have done with the SC15 Prisma, adding a sophisticated power supply to the Prisma circuitry found in the NP5 Prisma with the addition of a great DAC, at about the same price as the NP5 Prisma with these more advanced, expensive, and often linear, supplies.
We have had reports of very good results with something as cost effective as the iFi Power X, switch mode supply, or for linear supplies from manufacturers such as Audiophonics, SBooster, Fidelity Audio, and Farad, to name only a few of the many available.
When selecting a second party supply, be aware of these important specifications:
- Power supply – 5V (DC) / 2.0A (higher amperage can be used, but voltage must be 5V DC)
- Power plug – 5.5mm OD x 2.1mm ID, centre pin +
